Why I'm using Dictation for Writing & Journaling
To succeed, don't work hard - Inspiration for the week
I've tried various methods for my writing, from handwritten journaling to typing on my desktop. Lately, I've been experimenting with voice notes and dictation as a way to speed up my writing process.
I've found it particularly useful for:
1. Brainstorming ideas
2. Creating a loose outline
3. Dictating while taking a walk (it's like getting a mini-workout in the process!)
The most challenging part for me is the editing. I'm attempting to strike a balance between using ChatGPT and manual editing to bring my writing to a publishable level.
However, along the way, I've discovered several additional benefits to dictation. Here are my top 5 reasons why you should give it a try as well.
1. It enhances trust
The process of dictation helps me translate my deeper feelings and insightful thoughts into words. Sharing personal experiences helps build trust. That’s the kind of writing I like to read. And that’s the kind of writing I like to process as well.
This way, I think, I connect with you, the reader, on a deeper level. It fosters a sense of authenticity and relatability.
2. I embrace imperfection
Even though it can be tough, I always remind myself that perfection isn't the ultimate goal. My aim is to offer value by genuinely sharing a part of myself. Using dictation makes this process a bit easier. I accept my imperfection. And I don’t feel guilty about it.
3. Using ChatGPT for editing
Editing is the hardest part for me. But I found ChatGPT streamlines the editing process, making text more refined, readable, and ready for publishing. I also follow it up with manual editing, to ensure it sounds ‘human’.
4. Yup, you can Audio Journal
Beyond writing, I'm intrigued by the possibility of using audio journaling as a tool for mental decluttering. While uncertain of its effectiveness, I believe it's worth exploring. By verbally expressing thoughts, ideas, and reflections, I hoping to tap into a new dimension of my own self.
5. I’m a guinea pig. A meta-reason
Learning from others' is one thing, but there is definitely value in testing the techniques firsthand. Like Oliver Burkeman, I also hope to experiment various methods and report it. This week, it happens to be ‘dictation’.
